{"id":5420,"date":"2011-10-15T19:16:29","date_gmt":"2011-10-15T19:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/?p=5420"},"modified":"2024-06-24T15:37:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T14:37:44","slug":"birth-of-a-new-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/activism\/birth-of-a-new-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"Birth of a new movement: Occupy goes global"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"drop-cap-paragraph\">This new movement of ours, the Occupy movement, first exploded in New York, on Wall Street \u2013 and it was inspired in turn by the uprisings in Cairo and Tunis, via Madrid. Today there was hardly a city in the world not touched by the occupations. This global day of action saw protests in up to 1,000 cities in more than 80 countries across five continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We are all indignados now,\u2019 said London occupier Claire \u2013 one of 5,000 who turned up to target the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2011\/10\/15\/occupy-london-vows-to-bring-out-thousands-of-protesters.html\">London Stock Exchange<\/a>. \u2018We are all standing together with the people occupying Wall Street. We are making Tahrir Squares everywhere.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/news-desk\/occupy-boston\">Boston<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/news\/northern-ireland\/occupy-belfast-protesters-carry-on-camping-at-st-annes-cathedral\/28682629.html\">Belfast<\/a>, from <a href=\"https:\/\/libcom.org\/article\/two-reports-occupy-south-africa\">South Africa<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20111015002300320\">South Korea<\/a>, we have taken the streets, taken the squares, reclaimed the space that has been stolen by us inch by inch. We have a new model of protest: not a march from A to B, but occupations from A to Z. It will take time to see how many of today\u2019s protests settle into long-term occupations, but that it will be hundreds upon hundreds seems all but certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I write, the police may be coming down hard on us in London \u2013 but as we have seen in Wall Street, repression only makes this movement come back stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because we have a brilliant slogan, a slogan of incredible power, a revolution in one sentence: \u2018We are the 99 per cent\u2019. Out of the window go petty distinctions like \u2018lower middle class\u2019 and \u2018gold-plated public sector\u2019. Our target is crystal clear: we stand united against the 1 per cent who own almost all the wealth \u2013 the 1 per cent who have got rich off our backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one placard at Occupy London said today, \u2018This isn\u2019t a recession, it\u2019s a robbery.\u2019 In the UK, the 1,000 people in the Rich List have a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2011\/may\/08\/rich-list-recession-billionaires\">\u00a3396 billion<\/a> \u2013 up \u00a360 billion since last year. And the rich dodge an estimated \u00a3123 billion a year in tax on top of that. A fraction of these eye-popping amounts would eliminate the so-called \u2018need\u2019 for cuts and austerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the same the world over. The terrible inequality created as neoliberal capitalism spread its tentacles across the globe has been a key factor driving the Arab Spring. Since the Egyptian revolution, the protesters there have focused on trying to get rid of their own \u20181 per cent\u2019: they call them the \u2018little Mubaraks\u2019, the petty-dictator bosses who still own the firms and the factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/october-15th-united-for-global-democracy\/\">Occupy movement\u2019s global statement<\/a> echoes this, calling the IMF, G8 and co \u2018our global Mubarak, our global Assad, our global Gaddafi\u2019. It continues: \u2018The citizens of the world must get control over the decisions that influence them in all levels \u2013 from global to local.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is what this movement is about. \u2018From the public square, to the factory floor, to those huge, undemocratic international institutions \u2013 it is about handing over not just wealth but real control to you and me and all of us, the 99 per cent,\u2019 said Zoe in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We are the people yet we have no say. This is a global uprising to say: enough! We don\u2019t just demand real democracy \u2013 we are creating it, right here, right now.
