Palestinian political revolutionary Ghassan Kanafani<\/a> described the relationship between Israel and Palestine as a \u2018conversation between the sword and the neck\u2019. Capturing the pulse of Palestinians, Kanfani insisted it was not a \u2018conflict\u2018 between equal powers, but a struggle against settler colonialism and a fascist state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1972, Israel murdered 36-year-old Kanafani and his 17-year-old niece, Lamees, with a car bomb. Whilst they killed Kanafani, they could never kill his ideas. Like Malcolm X, Patrice Lumumba, Pio Gamo Pinto, and countless other anticolonial martyrs, Kanafani\u2019s spirit lives on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Kanafani asserted, responsibility for the attempted annihilation of Palestine \u2013 and systematic murder and maiming of Palestinians \u2013 rests with identifiable perpetrators. It is crucial to name, oppose, and break \u2018the sword\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel\u2019s genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing of the West Bank forces us to choose: either we dismantle the systems of domination that are killing and dispossessing Palestinians, or we accept them through silence. There is no neutrality<\/a> amidst genocide \u2013 no comfortable middle ground to retreat to. It is solidarity and collective action or nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solidarity remains plagued by paternalistic charity and adventurism, or worse, is billed as a bourgeois fantasy to \u2018save\u2019<\/a> others. Responding to colonial violence in Palestine requires a far less arrogant and self-aggrandising posture: solidarity as a political commitment, strong bond, and lasting relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solidarity mandates empathy<\/a>, humility, and devotion. It involves listening, learning, taking risks, and confronting the powers-that-be. It also demands disciplined organising, collective ethics, knowing the enemy, and soberingly, sacrifice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing the enemy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We write from within two Palestinian-led grassroots movements dedicated to Palestinian liberation \u2018from the river to the sea<\/a>\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Solidarity Movement<\/a> (ISM) participates in direct action and on-the-ground<\/a> accompaniment in Palestine. The Youth Front For Palestine<\/a> (YFFP) engages in strategic disruption and political education throughout the UK. ISM emerged in 2001 during the Second Intifada after Palestinian popular committees<\/a> called for international support. ISM is consensus-based, anti-oppression, and uses non-violent methods guided by local communities and activists. The YFFP was launched in 2022 after the Unity Intifada<\/a>. It upholds the Thawabet<\/a> and leads protests, Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaigns, and education events to pressure the UK government and businesses to end their complicity<\/a> in the Gaza genocide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We believe it imperative to know the enemy. Hence, this series interrogates the historical and contemporary forces culpable for ethnic cleansing<\/a> across the West Bank. Each entry will also focus on Palestinian resistance and sumud <\/em>(steadfastness) amid Israel\u2019s illegal occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do not describe the racial dehumanisation<\/a> and spatial domination of Palestinians as oppression owed solely to the ethno-nationalist aspirations of individual war criminals like Netanyahu. Nor do we view fringe factions as the only culprits given polling indicates<\/a> widespread support amongst Israeli society for \u2018eliminatory\u2019 attitudes toward Palestinians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The terror, trauma, and death of Palestinians are historical features \u2013 the raison d\u2019\u00eatre<\/em> \u2013 of Zionism<\/a> (read: Israel). Therefore, we write from an explicitly anti-Zionist standpoint because we, like Kanafani, understand it to be a fanatical ideology and colonial scheme that demands violence and, ultimately, the eradication of Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complicity and crackdowns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The crimes of Zionism have required complicity, apologia<\/a>, and active participation from accomplices across the globe. Allies from the imperial West, most prominently the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, aggressively abet the settler-colonial war declared on Palestine through funding transfers, arms shipments<\/a>, military intelligence<\/a>, and diplomatic cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Western powers have referred to Israel as \u2018the largest American aircraft carrier<\/a> in the world that cannot be sunk\u2019 and endorsed its \u2018right to defend herself<\/a>\u2018 via collective punishment, a war crime. The West also punishes dissent and cracks down on activism when solidarity threatens \u2018business as usual.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either we dismantle the systems of domination that are killing and dispossessing Palestinians, or we accept them through silence<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History \u2013 not 7 October<\/a> \u2013 is the starting point. Prior to and ever since the Palestinian Revolt<\/a> of 1936, Zionist lynch mobs<\/a> have seized territory and resources through an endless barrage of raids, massacres<\/a>, and pogroms<\/a>. Israel emerged as a nation-state hellbent on burying Palestinians in mass graves \u2013 just as it continues to do so with impunity today<\/a>. No amount of Israeli hasbara<\/a> (propaganda) or genocide denial<\/a> from the international community can refute this truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Palestinians, amid unchecked Israeli crimes against humanity<\/a> and the imposition of state-sanctioned Jewish supremacy<\/a>, reclaiming ancestral homes and living peaceful lives has become nearly impossible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palestinians remain steadfast in fighting for freedom and their right to return<\/a>. As Jawad, a Jordan Valley farmer we accompanied, reflected: \u2018Settlers steal water and burn our fields, then say we don\u2019t know how to manage the land like it\u2019s our failure, not the occupation\u2019s policy\u2026 \u2026the land will return to its original owners\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More settlers, more savagery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood<\/a>, Zionist settler violence<\/a> across the West Bank has surged. Israel\u2019s mandate is clear: steal Palestinian lands; establish illegal settlements<\/a>; wipe Palestine off the map<\/a>. This is nothing new. It can be traced back to the origins of Zionism in the late 1800s, the 1917 Balfour Declaration<\/a>, the 1948 Nakba<\/a> (\u2018Catastrophe\u2019), and the 1967 Naksa<\/a> (\u2018Setback\u2019). For over a century, Zionists have sought to erase Palestine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel\u2019s apartheid regime<\/a> ensures Palestinian claims to land and self-determination are stifled and disavowed. Settler attacks are savagely carried out to cleanse the countryside. Checkpoint abuses<\/a> and police brutality serve the same purpose. After a village demolition, long-time Palestinian organiser Riham explained to us: \u2018The settlers yell at us that we\u2019re \u201cinfiltrators\u201d, the funny thing is that my parents were born before \u201cIsrael\u201d even existed\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Racism<\/a> is starkly evident in the legal system, refugee camps, and prisons<\/a>. Israeli civil law governs settlers, granting them access to resources and official representation. Conversely, Palestinians are disciplined by military law and administrative detention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tariq, a Palestinian activist in Hebron, told us: \u2018If we raise our voices, they say we\u2019re being \u2018aggressive\u2019 and \u2018violent\u2019. If we stay quiet, we are accused of being \u201csuspicious security threats\u201d\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every facet of existence is subject to the directives of the Israeli army and Civil Administration. Control of natural resources<\/a> and nature reserves<\/a> further entrench Zionist rule. For many, the Palestinian Authority serves as a willing collaborator<\/a>, if not betrayer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To exist is to resist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Marauding settlers are at the vanguard of land grabs. They infiltrate fields to establish \u2018farming outposts<\/a>\u2018 and greenwash them as \u2018agricultural communities.\u2019 The IOF simultaneously creates \u2018facts on the ground<\/a>\u2018 by arbitrarily designating \u2018firing zones<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home demolitions are accelerating at an astounding pace. Planning commissions deny Palestinian permits while existing structures are razed by bulldozers<\/a>. By contrast, the expansion of prohibited settlements is booming<\/a>. Israel regularly sponsors new annexation projects and Israeli-only roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Palestinian student named Yasmin we met in Ramallah explained: \u2018You can see it; piece by piece the land is being cut up. It\u2019s divide-and-conquer. The point is to make daily life so hard we give up and leave\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zionist settlers inflict harm and fracture communities through beatings<\/a>, shootings, and attacks<\/a> on Palestinians of all ages. Control is enforced by harassment, intimidation, and vandalism<\/a>.  Israelis undermine Palestinian livelihoods by uprooting olive trees, burning harvests, poisoning water sources<\/a>, and driving imported cattle through crops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Settlers employ psychological terror through night raids<\/a>, ambushes, \u2018price tag\u2019 reprisals, arson, and the desecration of memorials to martyrs. As a Palestinian shepherd, Fayez, told us after one threatening incursion: \u2018The soldiers said they\u2019d burn us alive if we didn\u2019t leave in two days. We\u2019ve lived here for generations and don\u2019t intend to leave\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such are the realities of \u2018the sword,\u2019 that is, Zionist settler colonialism. As numerous Palestinians reminded us along the way: \u2018To exist is to resist\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
