I would like to begin by observing how the question posed before us today \u2014 what would a fairer society look like? \u2014 refrains from conjuring an ideal society. It invites us instead to a limited, seemingly grounded, comparative framework. It demands we imagine not a just society, but a fairer one. Fairer than what? Every hitherto existing \u2018society\u2019? Or this one of hereditary rights, hereditary privileges, hereditary property; fairer than this commonwealth of food banks built through colonial dispossession and slavery?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, implicit in the question of a fairer society is the possibility, even the desirability of transformation. But if <\/span>something<\/span><\/i> needs to be changed, that something falls short of <\/span>everything<\/span><\/i> we would need to transform to live in a just society\u2014economically, politically, ecologically, ethically, globally. That everything includes \u2018realistic\u2019<\/span> questions which strangle the imagination, rendering our yearning for revolutionary change and justice \u2018unrealistic,\u2019 not merely for now, but forever.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet it is in the nature of every \u2018revolutionary passion for justice,\u2019 as Hannah Arendt once named it, to resist this strangulation. The longing for what appears to be impossible compels us, in Che Guevara\u2019s aphoristic command, to be realistic <\/span>by<\/span><\/i> demanding the impossible. This revolutionary realism, as I would call it, contrasts sharply with what cultural critic<\/span> Mark Fisher describes as <\/span>capitalist realism<\/span><\/i><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The longing for what appears to be impossible compels us to be realistic by demanding the impossible<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capitalist realism is, in Fisher\u2019s words, \u2018<\/span>the widespread sense that not only is capitalism the only viable political and economic system, but also that it is now impossible even to <\/span>imagine<\/span><\/i> a coherent alternative to it\u2019<\/span>. Margaret Thatcher\u2019s forceful insistence that<\/span> \u2018there is no alternative<\/span><\/a>\u2019 represents perfectly well the confining vision of neoliberals who are \u2018capitalist realists par excellence\u2019. Invested in drawing borders around the imaginable and the possible, their ideological work consists in shaping our sense of ‘reality’ and with it, what is and is not seen as realistic and achievable.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fisher<\/span> argues<\/span><\/a> further that \u2018capitalist realism is not a particular type of realism; it is more like realism in itself\u2019. This realism seeks to provide, I would emphasize, an <\/span>epistemic<\/span><\/i> \u2018shield protecting us from the perils posed by belief itself,\u2019 especially \u2018belief\u2019 in anti-capitalist ideologies of the past. Nevertheless, capitalist realism maintains the prevalent and depressive \u2018belief\u2019 that all hope is a \u2018dangerous illusion\u2019 today. It renders any revolutionary desire for justice\u2014social, global, economic, ecological\u2014not merely \u2018unrealistic\u2019 but naively, if not madly, misguided.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capitalist realism pens our imagination in colourless parades of trooping pragmatism, policing the limits of our capacities to act, to live, even to love one another differently. In this situation, the injunction to be realistic by demanding the impossible requires immeasurable \u2018<\/span>experiments in imagining otherwise<\/span><\/a>,\u2019 in feminist writer Lola Olufemi\u2019s formulation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not incidental but essential to capitalism, however, that it incorporates into the global market as consumable goods our own anti-capitalist desires for living differently, according to different principles, in a just society. In this scene, Fisher finds, \u2018alternative\u2019 and \u2018independent\u2019 cultural spaces and attitudes become established styles, ‘in fact, the dominant styles, within the mainstream’. This insight allows him to observe how \u2018capitalist realism is very far from precluding a certain anti-capitalism\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here and now, the<\/span> LSE Festival<\/span><\/a>\u2014with its \u2018alternative\u2019 question of a fairer society\u2014can offer one example of what Fisher names \u2018corporate anti-capitalism\u2019. How else shall we explain its silent disavowal of the<\/span> militant strike wave sweeping through<\/span><\/a>\u2014and beyond\u2014the academy today? As<\/span> unionised workers at the LSE demand survivable workloads<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> survivable working conditions<\/span><\/a>, decent pay and decent pensions, it becomes impossible not to question the profit-making calculus of capitalist realism. Is this what a \u2018fair\u2019 university looks like?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, well-funded institutes examining inequality and well-attended festivals curated to demonstrate \u2018impact\u2019 and \u2018corporate social responsibility\u2019 both evidence <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> cater to our desire for social change and justice. They also offer corporations the opportunity to \u2018shape the World,\u2019 as the LSE slogan has it, by confining revolutionary desires and energies within the borders of capitalist realism. In Fisher\u2019s words, such undertakings \u2018<\/span>perform our anti-capitalism for us\u2019<\/span><\/a>\u2014not unlike Disney films with anti-capitalist themes, even this very speech. They enable us to participate in capitalism with a clear ‘conscience.’<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, there are moments and movements, networks and collectives, a surrealist poetics where capitalist realism <\/span>cracks<\/span><\/i>. Growing through those cracks, we become a spring. The Arab Spring, the Occupy spring, the movement for black lives spring to mind. They find us mad at last. Justice\u2014that burning longing enchanting every mantra of revolutionary action\u2014opens the scene of our imagination. We promise. \u2018No justice, no peace\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without capitalist realism, what would a just society really look like?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
