Current elections and debates are fought and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2020-03-11-political-memes-michael-bloomberg.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvLnVrLw&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJDs924drTwKhdflGLUdhgSv3K9AiMSDIVRTj-5gZdCuUGIuudka4KsiiIFbgk0ysD04VTZjGfZP870GmQSghISwaxTqlQ0CAC2c8_1wyXs8GZiQ1lbRJM7wMCDM2GugCuk6IVAA79F72PzLeGKdUkBasdZv86DtGYU4uiNewGGs\">won through memes as well as manifestos<\/a>. But while professional politicians are clowning, comedians in several countries have been trying their hand at serious politics \u2013 often with spectacular success at the polls, if not always in office. It&#8217;s the rise of the comedian politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beppe Grillo \u2013 Italy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-27859 size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Beppe-Grillo-800x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27859\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Beppe-Grillo-800x400.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Beppe-Grillo-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Beppe-Grillo-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Beppe-Grillo-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Beppe-Grillo.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Giovanni Favia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An early example of the \u2018populist\u2019 surge, comic actor and satirist Grillo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/who-is-beppe-grillo-five-star-movement-italy-referendum-party-matteo-renzi-resigns-a7456106.html\">co-founded the Five Star Movement<\/a> (M5S) in 2009. Its \u2018five stars\u2019 referred to the movement\u2019s five key issues: public water, sustainable transport, sustainable development, right to Internet access, and environmentalism. M5S\u2019s chaotic brand of anti-establishment politics and promotion of direct democracy saw it make gains in local and regional elections, and in 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobinmag.com\/2018\/05\/italy-elections-m5s-lega-euro-eu\">it became the largest individual party<\/a> in the Italian Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tiririca \u2013 Brazil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-medium wp-image-27944\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tiririca-1-800x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27944\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tiririca-1-800x400.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tiririca-1-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tiririca-1-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tiririca-1-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tiririca-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Fabio Rodrigues Pozzebom\/Ag\u00eancia Brasil<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2010, professional clown Francisco Oliveira Silva, known as Tiririca, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-11891910\">elected to Brazil\u2019s congress as deputy for Sao Paulo<\/a> with 1.3 million votes, a higher share than any other candidate. Tiririca, or \u2018Grumpy\u2019, ran on the slogan \u2018It can\u2019t get any worse\u2019. Re-elected by a landslide in 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/dec\/08\/brazil-clown-tiririca-grumpy-to-leave-congress-ashamed-embarrassed\">he stepped down three years later<\/a>, citing embarrassment at his fellow politicians, and has since returned to full-time clowning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marjan \u0160arec \u2013 Slovenia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-27861 size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Marjan-\u0160arec-800x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Marjan-\u0160arec-800x400.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Marjan-\u0160arec-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Marjan-\u0160arec-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Marjan-\u0160arec-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Marjan-\u0160arec.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: Slovenian Press Agency<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0160arec began his career as a comedian and satirist, before entering politics as mayor of Kamnik in 2010. In August 2018 he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/slovenian-comedian-gets-new-role-prime-minister-n901756\">became prime minister of Slovenia<\/a>, leading a fractious minority coalition of five centrist parties. He formerly led the parody political party Sarmu probo nisi (\u2018You haven\u2019t tasted the sarma\u2019 \u2013 a kind of stuffed vine leaf) created by a group of comedians from Mladenovac. \u2018Beli\u2019 ran for president in 2017 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-serbia-election-satirist\/in-serbian-election-the-comedy-candidate-is-no-joke-idUKKBN16S138\">self-satirising campaign<\/a> that nonetheless drew support from across the country. He finished third with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-39474145\">9 per cent<\/a> of the vote, ahead of several more established candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volodymyr Zelensky \u2013 Ukraine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-27863 size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/volodymyr-zelensky-2-800x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/volodymyr-zelensky-2-800x400.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/volodymyr-zelensky-2-600x300.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/volodymyr-zelensky-2-400x200.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/volodymyr-zelensky-2-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.redpepper.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/volodymyr-zelensky-2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: The Presidential Office of Ukraine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s current president had no prior political experience other than starring in the television comedy <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20200103-the-ukrainian-tv-show-that-predicted-the-future\">Servant of the People<\/a><\/em>. He played a high-school teacher who rises to the top of Ukrainian politics after a video showing him complaining about government corruption goes viral.
