Description

Saturday 17 December 2011 just south of Tahrir Square.

Acclaimed Spanish photojournalist Pau Rigol in the yellow hard hat and another man take cover during a stone fight between police (stationed at the Egyptian Institute in the gardens and on the roof) and protesters.

It was police and militia on the roof of the Institute who had started the violence some hours earlier by hurling stones, rocks and concrete slabs on protesters and indeed anyone beneath. Journalists appeared to be particularly targeted.

Rigol had gone to Egypt to work on his thesis on Egypt's upcoming parliamentary elections which led to his interest in documenting the protests around Tahrir Square.

Many of his photos were snapped up by the international media and at about this time he decided to embark on a career as a photojournalist. Later he went on to document the conflicts in Syria and the Ukraine for which he won a number of awards.
